Nordic Studies

Nordic Studies are offered online via zoom. Everyone is welcome to join in these discussions. Classes are year round with occasional breaks.  When a class is on break, the teacher is available for office hours during the published class hours. See Sonja Lodge Calendar for times and dates.   

Old Norse and Scandinavian Cultures
and Languages / Scandinavian Authors

Studies how Old Norse and the Icelandic Sagas influenced language and culture in Scandinavia, including very much into the present day.   Once a month, a Scandinavian author is discussed.

Time: Every Monday 7:00 – 8:00 PM (Third Monday is Norsk Bok)

Kaffepausen - kultur og nyheter
Nordic topics such as current events and culture are discussed in the first 45 minutes. After that we join in, as best we can, in Norwegian. 

Time: Every Tuesday,1:30 – 3:00 PM

Available on Zoom.


Scandinavian Language - Independent Study

Participants can get assistance with the Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, Gutnish, nynorsk, Faroese and Elfdalian.

Time: Every Tuesday, 7:00 – 8:00 PM

Available on Zoom.

Viking Life 

Viking life, everything about the Vikings:   History, food, crafts, runes and rune stones, etc.  Topics are chosen by the participants. 

Time: Every Wednesday, 4:00 – 5:00 PM
Available on Zoom.

Norwegian Language Classes

 In person classes will be scheduled when there is a sufficient number of students.  September - June.  To sign up, see contact information below.

Norskpdx offers online classes for those age 3 through adults.  Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Norwegian classes use books in the Sett i Gang series. Tutoring, translation, and test preparation are also available.   https://norskpdx.square.site/

Members can access these language lessons with sound in the Members Login area.

Carving and Crafts
Carving and Crafts is an opportunity to work on your current Norwegian skills project such as carving, hardanger embroidery, weaving, knitting, etc.  Bring your project to work on or come to get ideas.  Physical distancing is maintained.
